As part of our infamous #FinallyRyeday, this month we proudly present recipes from bartenders around the world who rock the rye boat.
Enter Nathen Pore of Melbourne, Australia. Nathen bartends at Seamstress Restaurant & Bar, which opened in 2007 in Melbourne’s Historic Chinatown District. Spectacularly, they’re housed in a 120 year old former textile factory, warehouse, and one-time brothel and Buddhist monastery.
1) What is your favorite way to prepare and drink WhistlePig?
When I met Raj, your Founder and CEO, I was tasked with making him something new in 5 minutes! I made him this drink based in the classical Flip recipe.
PIG ON A FLIP
Ingredients:
– 1 small egg yolk – (no egg white)
– 2 x dashes walnut bitters
– 10 ml licor 43
– 40 ml WhistlePig Rye
– 10 ml Tawny Port
– Nutmeg, Cinnamon, and Brown Sugar pre-Mix (Garnish)
1) Place all ingredients into a tin and pre-shake without ice.
2) Then fill with ice and shake with love.
3) Double strain into flute or any glass suitable for increments mentioned
4) Garnish with blend of grated nutmeg, cinnamon, and brown sugar mix over top.
I also enjoy a Rye Sazerac (which is my favorite tipple), so WhistlePig’s characteristics work amazingly. I prefer WhistlePig because it stands up against the herbsaint and is not lost like variations from its softer cousins (bourbon and cognac).
2) How did you first discover WhistlePig Rye Whiskey, and what was your initial impression?
I first heard of WhistlePig from a friend bartending in London. His response to me was “You gotta get WhistlePig mate, 100% rye whiskey.” Instantly I was intrigued, and when I heard Artisan Hand Crafted Spirits were to begin distributing WhistlePig in Melbourne I was quick to act.
3) Why do you think whiskey is seeing a resurgence in popularity?
One of the reasons from within the industry here in Australia is the amazing work of both Brand Ambassadors and Representatives. The ongoing training and incentives for staff who gain exposure for their portfolios is remarkable, and regular customers are genuinely interested in different expressions of products.
